The card plays a central role in everyday spending

Today we take a look at the role of the card in everyday life, based on a study published by the Banque de France.

Bankcard use in France in figures

Based on 2022 business volumes, Banque de France measures the continued growth of bankcard use in France:

  • 62% of cashless payments are card payments.
  • 60% of local payments are contactless.
  • 10% of contactless payments use a cell phone.
  • This increase in market share is essentially to the detriment of cheques, while the
market shares of direct debits and credit transfers have remained stable for over 15 years.
  • France accounts for 27% of card transactions in the European Union.

However, in terms of amounts, credit transfers dominate, with over 90% of the cashless payments market. Instantaneous transfers are gaining ground, accounting for 4% of transfers exchanged in 2022, versus 2% in 2021.
