Digital payment faces new challenges in a still growing e-commerce in Europe

Towards a circular and more digital economy

Ecommerce Europe and EuroCommerce present in a report the situation of e-commerce in more than 35 countries on the European continent. According to this report, the events that Europe is currently facing (Covid-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine) will influence its transition to a circular and more digital economy.

Indeed, online commerce has grown by 13% in 2021 and 11% in 2022. The user experience is also impacted, thanks to new technologies and new expectations of consumers, who want to vary the shopping experience in store and on the internet. 70% of small retailers who did not have a website before the pandemic now need support to have a digital presence.

In order to regulate this new market, the European Union created two regulations in early 2022: the Digital Service Act and the Digital Market Act, which aim to harmonize the rules governing digital services in the EU and ensure a level playing field for all digital players, regardless of their size.

EMVCo, in an era of wallets, continues to promote Secure Remote Commerce (SRC) / Click-To-Pay by publishing a guide that describes 5 SRC use cases (enrollment, standard purchase path, Card on File purchase path, orchestrated purchase path and purchase path via QR Code).

If Visa and Mastercard schemes have taken up the subject to complete or even compete with X-Pay offers that could damage their brand awareness, we can nevertheless observe that few merchants and acquisition platforms have implemented this functionality.

This guide could allow to sensitize these actors on the interest to make and on the possibilities offered by this tool, even if the schemes will be the main drivers to its adoption. In the context of the EMV compliant QR Code, it also allows to better standardize the market and to bring the benefits of tokenization.

The FIDO Alliance has published guidelines on user path security. Through this guide, FIDO leaves a purely technical domain and aspires to extend its penetration in the strong authentication market and increase its visibility and recognition among users. Apple's Passkeys will probably facilitate adoption, but for more traditional solutions, the FIDO Alliance does not mention the burden of implementing the different paths and visuals described, which can be a significant barrier to deployment.
